Beyond the Curriculum in Westbourne

Westbourne

11 March 2022

This week in the Discovery Den girls from Nursery to Reception have been learning about the differences and similarities between African and Asian elephants. They have read stories about Elmer the famous elephant along with studying non-fiction texts including pictures of baby elephants before they are born into the world. Girls have enjoyed a number of supporting craft activities along with a fun game of 'Doh nutters.' Did you know an elephant can smell water from 12 miles away? Our Westbourne pupils do!

Our youngest pupils celebrated International Women’s Day along with the rest of the school.  In Nursery, they focused on the books, ‘ABC What Can She Be?’  and ‘Girls Can Do Anything. They learned the repeated phrase, ‘Girls are amazing so shout it out loud, ‘I’m a girl, I’m fantastic, I’m strong, brave and proud!’  What an important message to inspire the girls.

Girls in Kindergarten and Reception enjoyed a special assembly on the same subject. Posters of women who featured in the assembly have been posted in Westbourne Hall to reinforce the important messages of the day.

There has also been a focus on oral health this week in Westbourne. This is an additional feature in the Early Years Framework for this year.  Each year group moved around the department to explore a variety of activities.

In the Nursery room, girls practised cleaning their teeth and talked about how to do this carefully and thoroughly. The girls were all excited to receive their very own bamboo toothbrush! In the Kindergarten classroom, all of the girls were able to watch a tour of a dentist surgery where they saw a real life check-up taking place! Thank you to Dr Hashmi for helping us with this.

In R4’s classroom girls played games where they had to consider foods that were healthy and foods that would be bad for your teeth. They also enjoyed role-play with dolls and toothbrushes. In R5 classroom, they made and decorated small trinket boxes to store their milk teeth in when they begin to lose them in the hope that the tooth fairy may visit!
