Biologists investigate line transects

Sixth Form

15 June 2018

Year 12 students ventured outside this week during their Biology lesson to carry out some field work on 'line transects' as part of their A Level course. The aim was to find out if the distribution of different plants varied across a particular area.

The girls investigated the plants growing down the grassy bank by the lower school car park. They did this by laying down a tape measure to create the line transect, then placed a square frame called a quadrat at regular intervals along the line. The abundance of different plants growing at each sampling point was recorded and the girls then displayed their results graphically. A variety of different species were found and they discussed the different factors such as soil pH and light intensity that may have influenced their distribution.
