Debating the Issues
09 December 2022
Debating Club is a popular co-curricular club which takes place during lunchtimes twice a week. On Mondays, Junior Debating Club is held for Years 7-9 where a wide range of topics have been debated. Within these last few Junior Debating sessions, debates revolving around school uniform, Disney princesses, the right age for a relationship, and same-sex schools have taken place. We divide the group into two sides in which one side debates for the motion, whilst the other debates against it – the division is completely random, so the girls can build on their debating skills rather than simply just choosing the side they agree with.
On Tuesdays we hold Senior Debating Club. In these sessions, slightly more complex topics have been debated thus far, including the right to abortion, whether the death penalty should be legalised, if sex work sets back feminism, and the existence of God. Within these sessions, the girls have also been able to build on their debating skills, through the discussion of ‘controversial’ subjects and through interaction with other girls of a different age group.
Last week an online debate was held in which strike action was debated – it was open to all year groups and was a slightly longer session which took place in the evening. Debating Club not only allows girls to view subjects from another perspective but also to build on their communication skills whilst learning how to articulate an intellectual argument.
