Happy Birthday, EHS

Westbourne | Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form

01 February 2019

On Wednesday, the whole EHS community of staff and girls from Nursery to Sixth Form gathered together to celebrate the School’s birthday. The celebration included singing and reflection on how the school has changed over the years whilst maintaining its traditional values.

The assembly began with Years 4-6 singing ‘Celebration’, putting us all in party mood. This was followed by ‘The EHS Birthday Song’ written especially for the occasion by Mr Southall and Mr Skilbeck and performed by girls from Kindergarten to Year 3.

The school archives provided material for a visual presentation of how the school has changed over the years with a particular focus on uniform. There were photographs of school sporting events showing examples of PE lessons and Sports days. In the past the pupils took part in archery, Greek dancing and cricket, and Sports Days provided opportunities for obstacle races including crawling through barrels and also deck chair racing! Gymnastics events were also quite different and much more formal. Esther modelled the gymslip which would have been worn for PE lessons in early days whilst Star and Maya wore today’s more suitable kit.

Using other pictures and items of clothing from the archives we looked at the changes in uniform.  Some of these were quite dramatic, particularly the change from green to navy blue. Polly modelled a Prep summer dress whilst Rhea and Hannah showcased the Senior version.  Zara and Izzy showed us what Senior pupils would have worn in winter whilst Georgie, Temi and Charlotte wore the beige winter outdoor coats. Dr Weeks even highlighted how itchy the fabrics of the past were compared to modern uniform.

Further singing items included a medley of songs from ‘Oliver’ by Years 7 and 8.  This linked with the enduring quality of friendship demonstrated by EHS girls across the years.  The Senior Choir sang ‘A Million Dreams’ as we look to them to shape the future of the school.

The celebration assembly concluded with everyone singing the School Song and Happy Birthday to EHS whilst looking forward to sharing some birthday cake at break time.

As we mark 143 years of educational excellence we wish to thank all our pupils, parents and staff who make this school such a wonderful place to learn and work. We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays!
