EHS Girls Go Gold
20 September 2022
At the start of last week, eight EHS girls, Mrs Hayward and Mrs Batchelor met at the very early time of 6.30am to travel to Buckinghamshire for the much-anticipated 'Girls Go for Gold' conference at Wycombe Abbey School. Organised by the Girls’ School Association (GSA), the girls were in store for a fab day of fitness and fun.
The day was held to celebrate elite young sportswomen from across the whole country by treating them to engaging and enriching talks from keynote speakers such as Professor Grey Whyte and Sue Anstiss.
For the duration of the morning, the girls took part in practical sessions such as cricket, netball and fitness where representatives from a number of universities in the UK encouraged and perfected the girls’ skills. I would say that the most eye-opening activity was the fitness tests. The girls’ competitive nature came to the forefront as the high-tech biomechanics testing assessed our reaction time, jump power and speed. It goes without saying that Olamide Ofinran was the fastest girl in the 30m sprint test!
During the afternoon session, two engaging talks were given, firstly by Sue Anstiss, who discussed the importance of women’s rights and opportunities in sport over the years. Next was Professor Greg Whyte, who delivered a fascinating scientific perspective on the physical differences and advantages between men and women within the sporting world. Overall, the day was a great success and a wonderful experience for all the girls involved.
