Exploring Urban Regeneration
28 June 2024
As part of the A-Level Geography curriculum we explore the theme of regeneration, and what better place to assess its success than Birmingham city centre?
On Tuesday, our Year 12 geographers braved the 27 degree heat to conduct fieldwork in four different areas of Birmingham City Centre, witnessing first hand the ongoing transformations.
Our journey began at Grand Central, known for its striking mirrored facade designed to reflect the city. This modern hub connects Birmingham to the rest of the country, symbolising the city's renewal and connectivity.
We then proceeded to Eastside City Park, where the extensive HS2 project is transforming the area around the redevelopment of Curzon Street Station. This site exemplifies the integration of green spaces with urban redevelopment.
Next, we explored the Snow Hill Business District, a key area driving the economic revitalisation of the city. Our final destination was the Library of Birmingham, a landmark of cultural regeneration.
This trip not only allowed our Geographers to envision the various projects and assess their successes but also provided inspiration for their own fieldwork which they will be undertaking this summer.
We are excited to see how these real-world examples of urban regeneration influence their upcoming projects and deepen their understanding of this crucial geographical concept.
