Faith in Focus

On the morning of Thursday 8 February, the Year 13 Religious Studies students left school promptly at 9am, travelling on the minibus with Mr Wiggins to visit Birmingham Cathedral.
We were spoken to by a number of staff from the Cathedral during the morning which served as an excellent opportunity to reinforce our study of Christian Beliefs and see how these beliefs impact the lives of individual Christians.
We were able to consider the place of creative expressions as we examined various icons and the recently restored stained glass images. We were joined by Rev Josephine Houghton to discuss and debate the roles of men and women in the church. We particularly enjoyed being able to grill her not only on the biblical foundations of her egalitarian perspective but also on her response to the problem of evil and suffering.
The discussion of the Eucharist proved equally engaging as our guide and the priest took different positions in their view of what happens to the elements of bread and wine.
The visit was an excellent opportunity to cement our learning in the classroom and we are very thankful to Mr Wiggins for organising the trip and to the staff at Birmingham Cathedral who so generously gave their time.
