11 October 2024

As part of their Science topic on rocks and soils, Year 3 embarked on an exciting visit to the Dudley Canal and Tunnel Trust. They were treated to a memorable narrowboat ride along a canal renowned for its stunning limestone caves and fascinating fossils. During the journey, they uncovered a magical underground world that dates back an impressive 428 million years.

The girls particularly enjoyed navigating through the different tunnels while wearing their hard hats, and they were fascinated to see the boat crew expertly moving the vessel by ‘legging’—a unique technique involving walking along the boat's sides. They learned about the history of the caves through engaging videos and vibrant light shows, discovering how limestone was mined in the area and its significant impact on the Industrial Revolution.

To deepen their understanding of fossils, the students participated in an interactive workshop focused on fossils and rocks. They were especially intrigued by the trilobites, affectionately known as the Dudley bug. As they walked along the canal, they explored the geological features that reveal stories from the past, enriching their appreciation of this incredible natural environment.
