Year 8 Visits Places of Worship

Senior School

18 October 2024

Written by Asees and Grace, 8M

On Wednesday, 9 October, we, along with the rest of our year group, went on a trip to see and explore three different places of worship: the Mandir, Gurudwara and Synagogue, as a part of our Places of Worship topic.

To start, we went around the Mandir, splitting into two groups to see the different shrines and architecture dotted around the holy place. It was fascinating to see the various shrines and even a demonstration of Puja at the end of the tour. All the shrines were unique and devoted to different Gods and Goddesses and they were beautifully decorated, and alongside the intricate walls and ceiling of the Mandir, it was a real treat for our eyes.

Then we were split into two groups again - one group went to the Synagogue whilst our group went to the Gurudwara. At the Gurudwara, we were greeted by a member of the Seva (the staff of the Gurudwara) and she guided us around the stunning holy facility. We saw different prayer rooms and classrooms which the Gurudwara provide for aspiring students looking for tutoring and extra practice. We then went downstairs to the Langar Hall where we were basked in an alluring smell drifting from the kitchen. Although we did not eat the food, we were able to look at the delicious food lovingly prepared by volunteers. Afterwards, we went into the Diwan Hall (the main prayer room) where a reading was being held and some students bowed down before the Guru Granth Sahib. Overall, it was extremely informative and interesting to see.

After a quick lunch break when we returned to school, our group then went to the Synagogue, where we were greeted by Geff (with a G), our Jewish tour guide. He told us about his family’s long history at the Synagogue and showed us around the engrossing entrance hall and the two prayer rooms in the holy place. Geff gave us lots of context on his history with the Synagogue and in conclusion, we learnt a lot and we even got to see some Torah scrolls which were humongous!

As we returned to school, we thanked our teachers and went home, smiles on our faces.
