In Conversation with John Haidar
28 April 2023
Last week, our A level English Literature students and some of our Gifted and Talented English students from Years 10 and 11 were fortunate enough to have an opportunity to discuss Shakespeare on the stage with theatre director John Haidar.
John has worked for the National Theatre and also directed productions of Richard III and Hamlet at Bristol Old Vic. His production of Hamlet has been shown nationally in cinemas and he informed us that it is soon to be broadcast by the BBC. John discussed how he got into the theatre, first by his English teacher taking him to the RSC and then when he joined Footlights whilst studying English at Cambridge. Our students where able to ask him about his directorial decisions and his opinions on gender and misogyny in Shakespeare.
It was an intellectually challenging afternoon that revealed how literature and theatre can provoke philosophical discussion.
