Leap Year 2024!
01 March 2024
Westbourne have celebrated Leap Year 2024 by holding a Beyond the Curriculum day. It began with children learning the reason behind a leap year and why it only happens once every four years. They were certainly very pleased to have an extra day to learn and play at school!
In Nursery, learning was linked to their nursery rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle and the cow who jumped over the moon. This was followed by girls exploring other animals that leap and jump!
In Kindergarten children used a globe and an orange to represent the sun to demonstrate how the world orbits the sun. They found it interesting that it takes 365 and 1/4 days for the world to do this! Children then moved on to think about what makes them leap for joy and enjoyed writing about this. They also made frogs to take home and in the afternoon they enjoyed a leaping competition to find out who could leap the highest and the furthest.
Reception also enjoyed a presentation as to the meaning behind leap year. They enjoyed making hopping frogs and headbands to celebrate. Their ballet focus was leaping and they enjoyed dancing to music to incorporate this.
