Lifesavers Round off a Successful Year

Senior School | Sixth Form

08 July 2022

EHS Lifeguards have had an extremely busy and rewarding year in school.

Throughout the year students have worked on our bronze, silver and gold rookie lifesaving awards. We have also learnt new practical first aid skills, for example CPR and how to use a Defibrillator. In February all our work paid off and we all received our certificates. Congratulations to the 52 girls who received lifesaving them.
This year we have also had a group of new instructors completing their Assistant Lifesaving Instructor qualifications and we look forward to seeing them teaching in the near future.

In October EHS lifesaving collaborated with the EHS swimming team to raise money for the Royal British Legion and South Tyneside General Hospital. We set a goal of 61 miles to reach and ended up swimming an amazing 177 miles!

We also raised £1,149 for our chosen charities! A massive thank you to all girls who swum for charity.

On the 20th-22nd May, our Lifeguard team were honoured to Lifeguard the ‘Prep the Pool’ event. Prior to the event all girls passed a 5m dive test with a rescue mannequin as well as a deep water spinal board assessment. The lifeguards are looking forward to Lifeguarding the Commonwealth Games in the Sandwell Aquatics Centre from the 15th July.

In June the Prep School and Year 7 girls all participated in different workshops relating to the RLSS Drowning Prevention Week. The RLSS aims to spread awareness of UK drownings. 64.2% of drownings happen in inland water. 44% of accidental drownings happen between May and August. 46% of people who drown in water never intended to be in the water. These statistics are why it is so important to learn to swim and keep yourself safe in the water. At lifesaving we practice lifesaving techniques but also make learning to save lives fun!

The girls have also completed The Platinum Jubilee Award. This is a one-off commemorative award with only 1,891 available, to mimic the award that Her Majesty the Queen completed in 1941. The skills involved in the original award have been modernised and developed to be up to date with today’s practices. The girls who succeeded were all presented with their awards in their year group assemblies.

On the 13th June, 13 girls attended the KEHS lifesaving gala. A vast variety of races were involved including body boards, side stroke, lifesaving backstroke and a jubilee race.

We are happy to announce that our Year 8 teams placed 2nd and 4th and our Year 7 teams placed 1st and 2nd. Thank you to all girls who took part.

It has been an amazing year and we are looking forward to the next academic year with new Instructors joining us, our lifeguards and girls old and new into Senior School becoming part of our amazing club.
