The wonderful late, Sir Ken Robinson, argued that creativity comes from fostering teaching that harnesses curiosity rather than simply memorising facts. He also talked avidly about the importance of finding your passion. This week in the Prep School I have seen evidence of curiosity in every area of the school. Both our Kindergarten and Year Four pupils have visited our wonderful neighbours, The Botanical Gardens, hunting for signs of Spring and immersing themselves in the adaptive nature of plants in the rainforest. Our Year Three girls have been in our Science Laboratory with our wonderful Science specialist, investigating magnetic fields using iron filings. Year Five have visited The Black Country Living Museum and our Nursery girls have been experimenting with patterns.
I was immensely proud of our Year One girls who bravely performed a wonderful assembly about their bodies to a large audience of family and friends. Not only was I blown away by the confidence with which the girls delivered their lines and performed their songs, but also by the breadth of knowledge and understanding that they demonstrated. They are passionate about learning and their curiosity is clearly evident whenever I visit their classrooms. Our small size allows staff to get to know their pupils extremely well and to individualise their learning.
As I ‘nodded my head to the rhythm of the music’ during the Year One assembly, it highlighted to me that at EHS Prep we have created an environment which allows for individualised learning; our size ensures we can support, nurture and develop the unique child and allow us to help develop our pupils’ creativity so that they can go out into the world as amazing young women and do wonderful things.
Have a peaceful weekend.
