Nursery to Year Six Highlights

Preparatory

28 March 2025

Pre-Prep and Prep girls have enjoyed a week full of creativity, exploration and fun. The teachers have shared some of the exciting activities that took place this week. Browse the gallery below for pictures!

Fishing!

In Nursery, pupils have been exploring the popular rhyme “1, 2, 3, 4, 5, Once I Caught a Fish Alive.” The girls have enjoyed a range of creative and hands-on activities linked to the theme. In the creative area, girls used their artistic skills to create beautiful fish collages and experimented with pattern-making using fish-shaped stampers and paint. Outdoors, they had great fun ‘catching’ fish with numerals on them, reading the numerals aloud, and working together to put them in order from 0 to 10.

A Spring Adventure!

The girls have had so much fun learning about spring in Kindergarten! The weather has been getting warmer, flowers are beginning to bloom and baby animals are being born! The girls started the week by printing lambs using pompoms and white paint. Their fluffy lambs looked so cute! They also learned about other baby animals such as chicks, ducklings, calves and kittens. The girls enjoyed talking about how birds make their nests in the spring. They used twigs, straw and pieces of leaves to create their own little nests. Some of the girls even pretended to be birds taking care of the eggs! They also practised writing about Spring and drew beautiful pictures to go with their writing. At the end of the week, Kindergarten girls went on a spring walk to the Botanical Gardens. They looked for signs of Spring; buds on trees, buzzing bees and some early flowers!

Shape Hunt!

Reception girls have been on a shape hunt this week. They learnt about 3D-shapes in the classroom through fun, hands-on activities. They then used the building blocks to sort them into different categories. Girls talked about the properties of 3D-shapes: noticing edges, faces and corners. On the way to lunch they discovered shapes were all around them, so they went on a shape hunt! Girls found enormous cylinders, cubes and spheres, they even found the kitchen staff holding a cylinder to serve the pesto!

Super Sandwiches!

Year One students had a fantastic time creating their own healthy sandwiches during their Science and Design Technology lessons. After designing their sandwiches last week, they gathered their chosen ingredients and wrote a clear list of instructions on how to assemble their creations. Following their instructions, the students carefully built their sandwiches, making sure to put a lid on top. Before tasting their sandwiches, they took a moment to evaluate how they looked and reflect on the process. Afterwards, they shared whether they enjoyed the result and thought about any improvements they might make next time. The girls had a blast during their sandwich-making afternoon, especially when it came time to eat the delicious results.

Creative writing

Year Two pupils have been working hard to improve their creative writing. They pretended that they had received a visit from a monster, then wrote a description of their unusual visitor. They logged into Seesaw on their iPads and were presented with a variety of different monsters to choose from. They thought of interesting adjectives for the various body parts and combined this with their knowledge of how to use commas to separate items in a list. They discussed similes and how including these, and punctuation such as question marks and exclamation marks, would elevate their writing. The pupils were justifiably proud of their wonderful work!

Magnetism in action

In Science lessons, Year Three have been exploring the fascinating world of magnets. The pupils tested a variety of items to discover which ones were attracted to a magnet and they were surprised to learn that not all metals are magnetic! They investigated the strength of different magnets by counting how many paperclips each one could attract. They also had a fantastic time working in the Science lab with Mrs. Eveleigh. There, they investigated magnetic fields using iron filings. As they sprinkled the filings over paper placed on top of a magnet, they observed the patterned that formed, revealing the shape of the magnetic field.

Hot houses in the Botanical gardens

In Year Four, our girls study the rainforests of the world- from animals, tribes to plants. To help understand the importance of rainforests, girls look at how the plants have adapted to hot, wet and sometimes windy conditions. To help bring their learning to life, on Tuesday Year Four visited the Botanical Gardens, in particular, the hot houses. The pupils had the opportunity to draw native plants like daffodils and primula. They then moved into the warmer climes to draw elephant ears, birds of paradise and giant ferns. All the girls really enjoyed seeing and sketching the plants.

Field Sketching

Year Five geographers have been learning how to read an Ordnance Survey Map using 6 figure grid references and the Inter Cardinal Compass points. This morning, we headed outside to draw accurate field sketches using a compass to face the right direction. Great preparation for our outdoor fieldwork in Cranedale in May! The results were fantastic with some great sketching skills.

Year Six in the Spotlight: Olivia Rehearsals!

Excitement is building as Year Six prepare for next week’s production of Olivia! With just days to go, the Octagon has been filled with the sounds of singing, acting, and the rustling of costumes as the girls bring this fantastic musical to life.

From Olivia’s inspiring journey to Fagin’s mischievous gang and Eliza Doolittle’s quick wit, each character is brought to life with enthusiasm. The production is not just about acting—it’s about teamwork, confidence, and stepping outside comfort zones. It has been particularly rewarding to see quieter members of the year group grow in confidence as they step into the spotlight. Whether on stage or behind the scenes, every girl has played a vital role. With just days to go, Year Six are ready to shine. We cannot wait to welcome families to what promises to be a spectacular performance.
