Nursery to Year Six Highlights
04 April 2025
Many of our families have celebrated Eid this week, but the whole school has been alive with the joys of Spring and cheerful smiles brought about by the arrival of some sunshine. It has been another jam-packed week filled with academic excellence, co-curricular clubs and activities, curriculum trips and performance opportunities.
Spring has Sprung!
In Nursery, the theme has been Spring! The children explored the school grounds on a nature walk, searching for signs of the new season. They spotted buds, blossom, flowers, and colourful leaves. The girls used iPads independently to take photographs of their discoveries. Back in the classroom, they continued their Spring-inspired learning by creating beautiful loose part collages. The girls used large wooden egg, butterfly, and rabbit shapes as a base, carefully arranging different materials to design their own unique springtime artwork.
Eid
Girls in Kindergarten have been learning about Ramadan and Eid, special times for many families. They were interested to learn about fasting, prayers and helping others as well as the importance of being kind and thinking of others. It was lovely to hear children talking about their own experiences and sharing their celebrations. To celebrate in the classrooms, the girls made Eid lanterns and cards. They enjoyed taking part in role-play using the characters from Rameena’s Ramadan story as well as beautifully colouring mehndi patterns.
Reception Pupils Shine in ‘Friends and Family’ Assembly
Reception pupils melted hearts this week as they took to the stage for their special ‘Friends and Family’ assembly. Proud parents, friends and staff gathered to watch them perform, celebrating the most important people in their lives. The assembly started with girls reading handwritten tributes to their friends, parents and loved ones, with each child sharing a message about someone who was special to them. As part of the performance, pupils sang ‘You’ve Got a Friend in Me’ from Toy Story as well as ‘Count on Me’ by Bruno Mars. The event also featured new songs and poems, and a beautiful hand-sewn card was given to family members in the audience. This assembly was not only a confidence boosting experience for the girls but a beautiful reminder of the strong connections that shape their early years at EHS.
Thinktank Adventure
Year One were thrilled to see the sun shine for their curriculum trip to the Thinktank. Whoops of delight could be heard as the girls boarded the school minibuses to take the short journey to the Thinktank Museum in Birmingham. The girls had an extraordinary day of fun and hands on learning and returned to school exhausted but happy, having truly immersed themselves in learning over the course of the day.
Scientific Similarities and Differences
Year Two have thoroughly enjoyed having vases of tulips and daffodils in the classroom to enhance their learning in English, Science and Art. Using oil pastels, the girls sketched the flowers and created impressive artwork which they should be proud of. They then became poets, writing their own Haiku poems about the Spring flowers. To create their Haiku poem, they had to focus on the syllable count of each word and choose the words and their order carefully. In Science, the girls dissected a daffodil and a tulip to identify different parts of the flower, such as the petals, stem and leaves. This led to some excellent scientific discussions about the similarities and differences between the flowers.
Times Tables Rock Stars!
This year, Year Three have been dedicated to mastering their times tables. Each week, they have worked diligently, tackling individual tables through lesson activities and their regular Minute Maths tasks. To further enhance their skills and improve their recall speed, they have also used Times Table Rock Stars on their iPads. Recently, they took part in an exciting TTRS Battle between the two classes. The girls put in an incredible effort, answering as many questions as possible throughout the week. Their hard work paid off, with many achieving new status levels in TTRS and others earning certificates for their outstanding participation. Their teachers are incredibly proud of the progress they have made in their times tables this year!
Coding Robots
Year Four have been very lucky this week! The school has purchased some fantastic new Spheros which are programmable robotic spheres and on Monday afternoon the girls had a chance to explore and use them. Firstly, they learnt to connect the Sphero to their Ipads and then they learnt how to drive them around. It takes patience and a gentle hand not to drive the Sphero into a wall. Furthermore, they had to code the Sphero to do all sorts of activities: change the lights, make music, change the picture and then to move the robots around the room. The girls ended the lesson with races to various spots and hit the cone. Great fun and fantastic coders in the making!
Stepping Back in Time
Year Five stepped back in time at the Black Country Museum to further explore the Victorian Era they have been studying in History. They explored the jobs available to children and were taught a lesson in St James’ Infant School by a rather fierce Mrs Griffiths. All of the girls behaved beautifully but were rather let down by Mrs Dawes who had painted her nails and was severely shamed! However, even worse was Mrs Cattell who had spent her money on biscuits rather than her education! The girls were all relieved that schools have changed so much and all preferred to be returning to EHS!
Mathematicians Master the Art of Angles!
Year Six have been deepening their mathematical expertise by exploring angles with precision and confidence. Using protractors and rulers, the girls have accurately drawn and measured angles while investigating key properties. Challenging problem-solving tasks have encouraged them to apply their knowledge and justify their reasoning with mathematical fluency. Their ability to explain and prove angle relationships demonstrates both logical thinking and perseverance. Well done, Year Six!
Aztec History Club Feast
Members of History Club enjoyed an Aztec feast this week as they continued their exploration of Aztec Civilisation! The girls enjoyed tortillas, kidney beans, sweetcorn,
mushrooms, honey, guacamole and tomatoes, all washed down with hot chocolate. There was even melon for dessert! Although the Aztecs also enjoyed feasting on green iguanas, axolotls and a great variety of insects we decided to give
those a miss!
