Nursery to Year Six Highlights
06 December 2024
What a busy week it has been in Nursery, Kindergarten and Prep as we have started seasonal celebrations and performances whilst continuing with school work. Don’t forget to take a look at the gallery below for pictures of some of the exciting activities the girls have enjoyed this week!
Festive Decorations!
After setting up the Nursery Christmas tree last week, the Nursery girls continued the festive theme by making their own tree decorations. They began by rolling out the model magic and used Christmas themed cutters to shape their decorations. Each decoration was carefully pierced with a hole at the top, ready for a sparkly thread to hang it. Then, the girls waited for the shapes to harden. Once they were ready, they picked their favourite paint colours and added a sprinkle of glitter to make them extra special.
Santa’s Workshop
There has been much excitement in Kindergarten as we have been talking about Christmas. Girls have enjoyed sharing the Nativity story and learning new songs to sing to parents and family as we perform Snuggle up Stable. In the classroom, they have worked on making and writing cvc words along with some Christmas picture addition. Time has been spent in Santa’s workshop making sure that the elves are all organised and fun was had in PE lessons when children entered into some competitive festive races!
Joyeux Noel!
The magic of Christmas has officially begun in Reception as girls immersed themselves into the festive activities. Reception have been busy making calendars and cards - not just in English but in French too! The glitter jar sprinkled even more magic to the occasion as the girls worked hard with their creations. This time of the year brings everyone together and there has been much chatter and laughter from the classrooms as they put their imagination and artistic skills to the test. Amid the busy craft sessions, excitement grows for the highlight of the term, the Nativity play. Reception pupils are eagerly rehearsing their roles as narrators, animals, shepherds, kings, angels and wise men and many more characters. The classroom has been playing the songs on repeat and the Nativity story has been read ready for the performance to parents. The countdown to Christmas has truly begun!
Queens of the Road!
To end the Year One Geography topic on our local environment, girls have been thinking about the importance of road safety. We have been learning the Green Cross Code and the importance to STOP, LOOK LISTEN and THINK before crossing the road. We set up a road in the school playground with a zebra crossing. Some of the girls were the traffic while others were pedestrians in their high vis jackets. A favourite activity for the girls was taking it in turns to be the lollipop lady. The lollipop lady had to get the traffic to stop before allowing the pedestrians to cross safely at the zebra crossing. These important skills are hopefully ones the girls will remember for life.
1B invited Mrs Hobson, Mrs Aston and Miss Robinson to join them in their classroom to share the great 1B Christmas Lights switch on. The class had created the most wonderful display to support their work linked to the story of ‘Ridiculous’ a tortoise named Shelley who goes for an adventure in the snow. Whoops of delight could be heard as the lights were switched on, following a raucous countdown.
Story Recounts
Year Two have been enjoying the stories of Julia Donaldson and creating artwork and stories based on them. 2R focussed on ‘The Snail and the Whale’ whilst 2S have been reading ‘Stickman’. The pupils listened to the stories several times to ensure they knew them well then rewrote them in their own words, taking care to recount events in the correct order and write in correctly punctuated sentences. 2S then followed instructions to create moving Stickman characters, carefully cutting out different parts then attaching them with split pins. The pupils are justifiably proud of the lovely work they have produced and are looking forward to seeing it displayed in school.
The Dentist Visit
Year Three had a fantastic visit from Dr. Jaz, a dentist, and Laiba, a dental nurse, from Mango Tree Dental in Moseley. The girls were excited to learn more about the topic they have been studying in Science this term— teeth and dental care. They asked insightful questions about the training required for both dentists and dental nurses, as well as how to properly care for their teeth. The children had a great time working on a worksheet all about teeth and enjoyed role-playing as dentists, using dental gloves, masks, mirrors and OptraGates. As a special treat, they were thrilled to receive goody bags filled with items to help them take care of their teeth at home.
Busy Artists!
Year Four have been busy making door weathers, pomanders and carrying out final preparations for their play - A Tudor Christmas. Using oranges and cloves, the girls made pomanders which have made the Year Four corridor smell beautiful and just like Christmas!
Farm to Fork
Year Five have spent this term discovering how their food leaves the fields and eventually makes it to their plates! They have Facetimed a dairy farmer in Scotland and investigated food labels and packaging. They now know that decisions about intensive and organic farming will depend on a number of factors and when they are budget managing themselves, they will be able to make informed decisions! The topic was completed this week as the groups presented their models of 3D farms and delivered their presentations. Fantastic delivery and teamwork by all.
Bake and Experiment
This week, delicious smells wafted from the Science room, drawing curious onlookers. The reason? Year Six were conducting an experiment on the factors
affecting carbon dioxide production in yeast. The activity involved baking three loaves of bread: one without yeast, one without sugar, and one with all the usual ingredients.
The students carefully observed the differences in how the dough rose and discussed the science behind it. The highlight, of course, was sampling the results! Not only did the
experiment teach valuable lessons about chemical reactions and fermentation, but it also left everyone with full stomachs and big smiles.
