Nursery to Year Six Highlights

Preparatory

07 February 2025

It has been a busy week in Pre-Prep and Prep filled with lots of exciting activities designed to inspire creativity, exploration and confidence. Take a look at the gallery below for some of this week’s pictures from each year group!

Football feet!

In one of the physical development sessions in Nursery, the girls took their learning outdoors to practise their gross motor skills. Pupils explored a range of movements using large balls, taking turns to throw, catch, and kick. This fun and active session helped to develop their hand-eye coordination, balance, and teamwork. Through play, they built confidence in their physical abilities while enjoying the fresh air and outdoor space.

Balanceability

Kindergarten girls continue to enjoy in their balanceability lessons! Their confidence and determination improve each week! This week they were working hard on their pedalling skills, using trikes to help get the motion going. They also tried to speed up their running legs while using the balance bikes, along with remembering to ‘squeeze’ the break when they needed to stop. It was great to see some of the girls attempting to use bikes with pedals. Although a little wobbly, they showed great concentration and courage to have a go!

Creative Sewing

Reception girls have been introduced to sewing this week. This activity has many benefits and, by far, is the improvement of fine motor skills. Handling a needle and thread strengthens hand-eye coordination and finger dexterity, which supports writing and drawing abilities. Girls have shown determination to complete these tasks as well as nurturing their creativity by choosing the colours available to them. This one-to-one activity encourages the quietest pupils to be more expressive and confident to see themselves as a valuable individual.

Wonderful Writing

Year One have been learning all about their bodies in our weekly Science lessons. Girls were challenged to paint themselves in their school uniforms, thinking about appropriate colours to use for their hair, eyes and skin colour. They also did some wonderful writing all about themselves to go alongside their paintings. There were some super sentences written, remembering to use those all-important capital letters and full stops!

Marvellous mass!

Year Two pupils have been developing their knowledge and understanding of mass. There have been lots of practical investigations both inside the classroom and at home. The pupils have used a range of balances and scales to discover the mass of a wide range of classroom items. They have held a one kilogram weight and estimated whether items such as a spider and a large bag of potatoes have a larger or smaller mass. They have learned how many grams equal one kilogram. Finally, the pupils pretended to work for Royal Mail, weighing parcels on an interactive app on their iPads.

2D Shapes

Year Three have been exploring 2-D shapes in their Mathematics lessons. They revisited the names of common 2-D shapes and practised identifying right angles using right angle finders. A highlight of their learning was creating composite shapes by combining two or more individual shapes. They also applied their knowledge of symmetry to make precise cuts in folded paper, revealing new shapes. Throughout the week, students used Seesaw to capture and share photographs of their hard work.

Rainforest coding

In Year Four’s computer lessons, the girls have started a new topic - coding. Pupils have been learning which things need a code to work. The girls asked the question —What is coding? They discovered that it is just like a recipe to follow to make the computer understand what you want it to do.
Year Four started in the playground, giving instructions to a partner. The instructions had to be clear and specific. It enabled the pupils to draw a shape on the floor using chalk. They then progressed to making and giving instructions to a robot to enable it to move through a series of adventures. The pupils have shown creativity and perseverance, as if at first it does not succeed, then rearrange the instructions and try again!

Perfecting portraits!

Year Five had a fantastic time when they were invited to the Senior School for an unforgettable portrait workshop in the Fine Art Studio, led by the talented Miss Mullett.

The session began with an engaging introduction to portraiture, before diving into the fascinating world of facial proportions. Once the girls had carefully mapped out their features, they were introduced to the magical world of charcoal. The real fun began as they mastered the art of tone and shading, bringing their sketches to life by adding depth and dimension to their faces. Layer by layer, the girls honed their skills to create stunningly realistic portraits.

As if that wasn’t inspiring enough, they also had the chance to admire the incredible artwork created by the older students, fuelling their passion to keep practising and perfecting their own sketching techniques. What an inspiring, creative session!

Budding Journalists at Work!

Year Six have explored newspaper writing, investigating classic fairytales with a journalistic twist. Was the Big Bad Wolf truly guilty, or did the Three Little Pigs frame him? From Twinkle Twinkle Little Star shining too brightly to Humpty Dumpty—did he fall, or was he pushed? —the girls have crafted creative reports filled with intrigue. They have enjoyed adding quotes and using direct and reported speech while ensuring their reports follow key newspaper features. Their enthusiasm for storytelling and journalism has been fantastic, and we look forward to seeing their writing continue to develop!
