Prep Musician of the Year

Preparatory

27 April 2018

After weeks of preliminary rounds and a delay due to the snow last term, the finals of the Prep Young Musician finally took place last Friday.

The stage was set and the musicians were ready to perform their pieces to the gathered audience of friends and family and to Margaret Pickford, the adjudicator.  Margaret has been a Music teacher in middle and secondary schools, including EHS, and has set up a number of choirs.  She also teaches piano and music theory privately and is an examination accompanist who enjoys playing piano duets.  She is passionate about the power of music in children’s lives and the joy and fulfilment it can bring and was delighted to be asked to judge our competition.

The girls performed in year groups starting with our youngest musicians in Year 3 and progressing to Year 6.  We were treated to a feast of music which featured playing on piano, flute, clarinet, guitar, trumpet and singing.  The girls all performed with confidence and skill and they also demonstrated support for their classmates throughout the evening.

Whilst they were waiting excitedly for the results, certificates were presented to all finalists and the audience was entertained with exceptional performances from several previous winners of the Young Musician title, Rebecca on piano and Derwent on harp.  The two girls, who are the Prep Music Prefects this year, had helped to host the evening’s events.

On her return to the Octagon Margaret Pickford, before announcing the results, expressed her congratulations to all girls on the standard of their performances.  She also reminded them that music has the power to make things better in the world and to better understand other people without the need for words.  She urged them all to continue playing and singing.

Finally, the results were announced and we congratulate Bhavna in Year 3, Renia in Year 4, Millie and Sophia joint winners in Year 5 and Emma in Year 6.
Our overall winner and Prep Young Musician of the Year for 2018 is Maia to whom we say a huge well done.
