Prep Musician of the Year
31 March 2023
Auditions for our Prep Young Musician of the Year competition started in January when all girls in Prep, in Years 3 – 6, were invited to enter and perform for their Music teacher. From this first round the finalists were chosen for each year group and the final was planned for early March. Some unseasonal weather however, meant that we had to postpone and Thursday, 30 March, the new date finally arrived.
The 19 finalists were excited all day as they waited to perform for a gathered audience of parents and friends and our adjudicator, Mr Sandy Hay. Mr Hay is a teacher, flute player and conductor who, having studied as a Postgraduate at Birmingham Conservatoire, made the city his home. In addition to teaching at a number of the King Edward’s Foundation Schools Mr Hay is the Musical Director of the Birmingham Flute Choir. He is also an experienced adjudicator having officiated at Music competitions in Northern Ireland and the Midlands.
The finalists in each year group performed, starting with our youngest pupils, and then had their finalists certificates presented whilst Mr Hay deliberated his decisions. Before Year 6, our final group performed, we were treated to a performance of ‘La Bamba’ by our Prep Flute Group accompanied by Mrs O’Malley playing percussion.
After the final class, whilst Mr Hay made his final decisions, we were treated to a performance from our last year’s winner, Jessica Hung who played ‘Perpetual Mobile’ on the violin.
On his return, and after some very difficult decisions, Mr Hay announced the Year Group winners as Coraline in Year 3, Ava in Year 4, Catie in Year 5 and Kritika in Year 6. The overall, and deserved winner and Prep Young Musician of the Year for 2023 is Davica Roles.
Our warmest congratulations to all girls who took part from the earliest auditions to the final event and our grateful thanks to all of the Music Staff involved in the whole process. We are looking forward to some further stunning performances next year already!
