Earlier this month we welcomed Giles Abbott, well-known story teller, to EHS. He spent the day with Year 3 helping them to write exciting stories and then to recite them using interesting actions and voices. Last Friday parents and members of staff enjoyed an assembly which showcased these skills. The girls had worked extremely well in groups to create imaginative tales which they presented very confidently. Giles would have been very proud of our authors in the making.

Also on Friday, Year 4 girls had a taste of the tropics when Dave Shaw brought the Rainforest to us in the Prep School. The exotic creatures are always a favourite way of extending the girls’ Geography knowledge.

In our Celebration Assembly this week we once again had a range of other talents to recognise. Our Well Done certificates were awarded for Victorian History, self portrait painting, reading with expression, sharing creative ideas, rounding in Mathematics and working hard across the curriculum. Congratulations to the girls for their endeavours and to Lucy in Year 1 for being voted ‘Star of the Week’ in Ballroom Dancing and Nitya in Year 3 for passing Stage 5 in swimming. Our Year 6 girls were awarded their Grade One Foil awards in Fencing.

Tuesday was a busy day which began with all girls in Years 1 – 6 attending their first House Assembly of the new year. Well done to House Captains for preparing in advance. At lunchtime Year 5 girls enjoyed their second session of Masterclasses with the Sixth Form scholars in Senior School.

In the afternoon Year 1 girls hosted Reception girls. Some time was spent making new friends in the playground and then Year 1 read their favourite stories to the younger girls. This transition activity will help Reception girls to settle into Prep when they join us next year. We are sure they cannot wait to meet up again next half term.

You can read more about other Westbourne activities in Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception including helping to prepare birdfeeders for our garden in our separate article.

In Year 2 girls have been extending their time-telling skills using both analogue and digital clocks and have particularly enjoyed their Science lessons about Colour and Light. They have used prisms to split white light creating rainbows showing all the colours of the spectrum. They have also used red, blue and green boxes to create white light.

Next week we have a number of opportunities to welcome parents into school. Tuesday morning is Open House for Year 1 parents. There is a meeting on Tuesday for parents of Year 6 girls going to Portsmouth and one on Thursday about the Year 4 trip to Culmington Manor. On Friday parents of 5E girls are invited to join us for the class assembly. We look forward to seeing as many parents as possible.
