Richard III Brought to Life
30 September 2022
On a warm evening in June, twenty EHS girls from the English, Drama and History departments clambered on to a coach and were driven to Stratford. After a lovely meal, we met back at the theatre for the main event; the RSC’s production of Richard III.
There was a great deal of anticipation, especially considering the RSC had cast the first disabled actor to play Richard, and having settled in our seats, the play began to an intense monologue from Richard himself. As the play progressed, we learned about his rise to power; his greed and his eventual summit as the King of England. It was a play of murder, betrayal and deception and a thoroughly interesting watch. The ending was cathartic; the culmination of the events in the play, and his eventual demise after his villainous journey.
We particularly enjoyed the use of imagery in the final scene; Richard’s cry ‘My kingdom for a horse’ was a satisfying display of humility at the end of the play, and the staging of a symbolic horse by the actors was one of the most impressive sections of the performance. We really enjoyed the play; the imagery was captivating and the dialogue was fascinating.
