Star in Ascendance
10 December 2021
We brought you recent news of Year 9 pupil Star’s sporting success. Fending off competition from other girls in her age group at the Midlands regional round of the National Youth Climbing Series, Star’s technical skill, daring and sheer determination saw her selected for the Southampton finals.
The finals took place over a gruelling weekend, where Star was required to compete against girls from across the UK. Not for the faint-hearted, climbing is a combination of bouldering and lead climbing. Bouldering involves short technical problems without ropes which requires very high levels of strength and power. The objective is to climb as far as possible without falling off (see video clip below). Lead climbing involves longer technical routes in which the objective to get to the top. This requires significant strength, endurance and tactical awareness. In lead climbing, the climber is attached to a rope and has to clip the rope to the wall in a specific sequence to ensure their protection from a falling.
We are delighted to say that Star placed an incredible 14th in the country out of 30 competitors! We send her our warmest congratulations on this remarkable achievement.
