Inspiration and aspiration on STEAM Day
14 February 2020
On Wednesday, we were delighted to be joined by the inspirational Dr Anne-Marie Imafidon MBE to launch the Edgbaston High School STEAM Day, a special day held to inspire pupils into the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths.
Dr Imafidon is the CEO of Stemettes, an award-winning social enterprise working to inspire and support young women into STEM careers.
In her key note speech to an audience of Senior School and Years 5 and 6 Prep pupils, she encouraged the girls to pursue careers in STEM and explore the range of opportunities available to them. The girls thoroughly enjoyed what was a fascinating and inspiring talk. Please do read the more in-depth interview with Dr Imafidon in this issue of Friday Headlines.
Pupils in Years 9 and 10 then spent the rest of STEAM Day taking part in an engineering workshop with the Smallpeice Trust, exploring circuits and electricity, forces and renewable energy. In small groups, they were challenged to design and construct a gearing system and wind turbine blades to produce the greatest amount of electricity.
Our STEAM Day event will be followed by a STEMester, a term of activities designed to enhance pupils’ learning in the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths
through hands-on projects, problem-solving and further industry-inspired workshops.
