This Week in Westbourne

The girls in Westbourne have enjoyed their weekly learning and their studies beyond the curriculum too. Studying bones and x rays in the Curiosity Corner has continued and a Beyond the Curriculum Day was spent on the theme of ‘Leap Day’.
Reception girls have also continued to recap the sh, ch, th digraphs in Literacy lessons and were very creative when they painted some scallop shells in their Topic lessons. In Mathematics lessons, addition continues to be a favourite topic and girls have now moved onto counting on number lines and adding three or more numbers together. Some keen mathematicians even moved on to extension work! In the Outdoor classroom, Reception girls made three life size scarecrows. They are proudly guarding the outdoor area, which is causing much amusement to visitors!
If you are looking for a new hat you should visit Kindergarten where they have been busy designing and decorating a selection of beautiful hats. Hats perfect for a wedding or just a sunny summers day! This has been in response to the story ‘Mrs Honey’s Hat.’ The girls have been working hard on their letter formation, paying particular attention to the letter ‘h’ as this has been the focus sound this week. Children have also explored materials, thinking about texture and describing what they can feel when running their fingers over different materials. They were challenged to give Kipper a new hairstyle using a selection of interesting materials!
The focus in Mathematics this week was weight. Kindergarten girls have used balances to compare the weight of two objects. They were quick to notice how the balance worked and were keen to find two objects of similar weight so that the scales would balance! Time has also been spent learning about how bees make honey, this was followed with some beehive creations and a little tasting of some honey sandwiches. Yum!
In Nursery this week the theme has been the rhyme Hey Diddle Diddle. They have acted out the rhyme with props, used the interactive table to move objects in time with the rhyme, matched spoons to dishes and learnt about stringed instruments and what they sound like. They used mirrors to practise making lots of different expressions linked to different emotions and talked about what may make us feel this way. They sequenced pictures from the rhyme, practised tracing numbers to 5 and matching colours independently.
Nursery rhymes offer so many opportunities for learning and for developing skills in all areas of the curriculum.
