This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

15 March 2024

In Nursery the rhyme of the week has been Miss Polly Had a Dolly. In the girls’ emergent writing they worked in pairs, one as the patient, and the other the doctor who wrote a prescription ready for the patient to take to the pharmacy. They also looked at the names of body parts and matched them to dolly correctly.

Another topic was talking about germs and how they are bad for us, especially as they cannot been seen, meaning that washing hands is most important.  In the water tray we experimented with making lots of potions and medicine for dolly and in the weekly cooking session we made soup which is always nice to eat when you are feeling poorly!  Dolly recovered well with the care she received.

Kindergarten children have been encouraging the sunshine to make an appearance this week as they have been thinking about spring. It was lovely for the girls to be able to explore the Botanical Gardens for these signs. They found daffodils, crocus, snowdrops, narcissi as well as beautiful pink and white blossom on the trees. They listened out for birds singing and insects crawling but were unable to find any butterflies on this visit.

Work in the classroom has been centred around this theme too. Girls have worked had to create thoughtful pieces of writing as well as focusing on the initial sounds of words such as lamb, frogspawn and daffodil. The girls have also worked to improve their number formation through a range of counting activities. We look forward to an Easter theme next week.

Reception girls have been planting beans this week. On Friday, they went into the outdoor area and planted beans into a pot. They then had fun in the 'mud kitchen' before returning to the classroom. Their beans are now on the window sill ready to be watered and to grow.

Continuing with the bean theme, girls learnt about sequencing in Creative Writing and wrote their own instructions on how to plant a bean. They created some bright finger painting flowers inside and then ventured outside to draw flowers using pastel crayons. All these flower pictures have been displayed on the windows to brighten up this wet March week!

In Topic lessons, girls have used their vivid imaginations and made miniature gardens complete with ponds, paths, ducks and bridges! They had a wonderful time being creative during this session.  They asked questions, shared resources and described their garden in detail to their friends. In Religious Education, girls made models of Jesus' tomb after listening to The Easter story and in French have learnt new musical movement songs which they took part with much amusement.

Another busy week in Westbourne!
