This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

11 November 2022

Nursery girls were out and about in the Outdoor Classroom this week collecting natural treasures which they then took back to the Discovery Den to investigate further using the microscopes.

Kindergarten also enjoyed ‘cooking’ with nature in the mud kitchen in line with their study of the letter sound ‘n’.  Back in the classroom they also worked with numbers, counting and writing them.  They have read many night time themed stories and thought about nocturnal and diurnal animals and the difference between night and day. Our school nurse visited to talk about her job and they have ended the week with a focus on poppies.

Reception girls have also been curious scientists using microscopes to study autumn seeds and leaves in detail inside. They could see the veins clearly on some of the leaves. Despite the recent wet weather they have also enjoyed time outside learning to use tools safely. They used saws to make twigs and sticks shorter, as well as hammers to destroy pinecones!

Reception girls have been using the 'tuff' tray too, to extend their number recognition. Numbered cars were used to park in the correct space on the tray.  They also found the interactive white board; a fun way to learn to count accurately. The animal figures have been a great resource to make a repeating pattern and the pompom game using brightly coloured tweezers have strengthened their fine motor skills - ready for writing!  They also could not resist getting the farm out again, complete with Weetabix hay bales.
