This Week in Westbourne
27 January 2023
Chinese New Year has been celebrated in Westbourne this week. In Nursery this has been the topic in their Curiosity Cube and has been the focus for their work. The girls have decorated lanterns and fish using the lucky gold and red colours and have also made rabbit silhouette pictures. They really enjoyed some traditional ribbon and dragon dancing to Chinese music. Finally they used their fine motor control skills to find hidden red and gold items in the shredded paper and to create Chinese numbers.
Celebrating Chinese New Year in Kindergarten included making dragons and rabbit-themed activities. They also counted Chinese items and created a graph from the data. The girls have been studying the letter sound āgā which involved listening to the stories of Goldilocks and the Three Billy Goats Gruff. They wrote a letter to Goldilocks from the three bears apologising for their behaviour. The three billy goats enabled the girls to do some size comparison using appropriate mathematical languages and they developed their shape knowledge looking at ovals, pentagons, hexagons and octagons.
Reception girls have made wonderful Hyacinth pictures. They even grew their own Hyacinth in the classroom too and it smells wonderful. In their free play time, Reception girls have been very creative and have created rabbit hats and crowns - all by themselves!
All of Westbourne girls have enjoyed experimenting with the properties of water in the Discovery Den this week too.
