Year 8 pupil Tiffany has gone from strength to strength in her achievements in swimming inside and outside of school. Tiffany recently qualified for an extremely exciting competition this summer so Sixth Form student and aspiring journalist Polly Starkie sat down with her to find out more.

Tell me about your forthcoming swimming competition in the summer.
I am going to be competing at the British National Championships held from the 23rd-28th July at Ponds Forge International Pool in Sheffield. The 24 top-ranked swimmers in each event in each age grouping are invited to attend and I’m going to be competing in the age category of 13-14 for the 200m Butterfly.

Who are you swimming against? 
I will be competing against people from all over Britain so England, Scotland and Wales, all in my age category.

What did you have to do in order to qualify? 
There’s a leader board on the Swim England website and for that, you have to do a time in another competition. I got my time at the West Midlands Championships in the final for the 200m Butterfly scoring 2:33:14, so I managed to qualify for the event. 

What training will you be doing to prepare?
I’m going to be doing some longer distance training. At the moment I train at City of Birmingham and we do longer distances and more kicks so I can work on my last 100m, making sure my kicks are still fast and powerful. I will also do land training for strength – we do that as well as pool work.

What are your hopes for the future in swimming?
My next target is to make British Champs because then you can be selected for different things. In the next few years I would like to make European Juniors and then as I get older I would love to do the Olympics for Team GB and the Commonwealth Games for England.
