Lapworth Museum Visit for Year 6

Preparatory

11 November 2022

A visit to the Lapworth Museum at the University of Birmingham enabled Year 6 pupils to have the opportunity to explore one of the UK’s most outstanding geological collections and enjoy a range of innovative and interactive exhibits that extended our learning in both the Geography and Science curriculum.

We explored the state-of–the-art galleries at this museum, answering challenging quiz questions along the way. Participating in a fun scavenger hunt led to us enjoy seeing the most extensive exhibits of fossils, minerals, rocks and precious stones in the West Midlands - in excess of 250,000 at the last count! The large collections of early geological maps and zoological specimens were also a sight to behold. The museum itself dates back to 1880, with the architecture of the building being fascinating to see.

An expert geologist helped us to explore facts about earthquakes and the effect that they have on buildings. We learned, through practical activities, about how houses can be made more stable in an earthquake zone. We all enjoyed testing our engineering skills! After studying how volcanoes are formed, we then created an imitation of a volcano erupting, amazed by the chemical reactions that took place as part of the experiment.

From rocks and fossils to volcanoes and earthquakes, and even the bones of a replica dinosaur, the museum captured the imagination of us all!
