What's on in Westbourne
18 February 2022
The Discovery Den this week has given the girls the opportunity to visit London, without actually leaving Westbourne. The Underground, royal crowns, iconic buildings and, of course, Her Majesty the Queen were some of the areas the girls were able to explore.
Meanwhile, back in Birmingham, there were many other activities to extend the girls’ skills. In Nursery, with Monday being Valentine’s Day it was very appropriate that the theme of the week was based on the Queen of Hearts rhyme. The girls enjoyed role-playing this rhyme and all of the associated activities. They cut hearts from clay, painted them and made them into a necklace. They also identified heart shapes, made jam tarts and practised their cutting skills by cutting out heart shapes.
In Kindergarten, this week the focused letter sound was ‘f’. On Monday, it was Valentine’s Day, so they printed flower cards for those they love using celery! They also practised forming the letter f and copy writing some f words. The girls completed some addition too and thought about how many there were all together.
Other Kindergarten activities included thinking about the Rainbow Fish story and how important it is to share. They finger-painted the rainbow fish with sparkly paint to give it some shimmery scales and through play they also practised pen control, retelling the story using puppets, using the playdough to make fish and sea creatures and also ordering numbered fish to 10.
Learning about farm animals gave opportunity to talk about the different names of male, female and baby animals, matching them up and there was the life cycle of a frog to consider too. To end the week girls will be considering their favourite fruit and will be learning all about flamingos and making their very own flamingo puppet.
In Reception, girls have learnt about gravity, which was demonstrated when the marbles they were using in the marble run came down the chute, to the trough. They then used their design skills to create a unique run for their marbles. Girls have also continued to learn numbers to 10 in French.
They all went on an adventure to the Year 1 classrooms in Prep this week where they made the most of the morning sunshine to play with the equipment on the big playground. It was lovely to see both year groups playing together and they are all looking forward to their next activity later in the term!
