The focus for our Discovery Den this week has been the topic of birds. We hope that exploring facts about birds will have inspired the girls to spend some time bird watching during the national Big Garden Birdwatch weekend. They are certainly enjoying the opportunity to extend their knowledge beyond the curriculum.
In Nursery, the chosen theme for this week has been sheep and the three rhymes of Mary Had a Little Lamb, Baa Baa Black Sheep and Little Bo Peep have provided much inspiration for activities. These have included a visit to the Outdoor Classroom to paint using stencils and mud in the mud kitchen. Back inside they printed circle sheep, collaged some fluffy sheep and practised pencil control by making patterns on sheep shapes. They also made some tasty sheep treats from crackers, dairylea and chocolate fingers and helped Little Bo Peep to find her sheep that were lost in the Nursery. In addition to creative activities the girls focused on learning more about the number 2.
In Kindergarten, they have been looking at the letter g. They looked at the g formation on the interactive white board and at a book beginning with the sound that Jiya brought in from home. There was also a focus on shape work and the girls looked for shapes all around them and playing a shape game. The girls enjoyed their weekly visit to the outdoor classroom and enjoyed working together to make a model using bricks.
Reception girls are making good progress with learning their letters and sounds and have made the most of the 'free play' writing table available to them in the classroom. They have enjoyed writing in the books provided and this has kept them very busy, writing notes to friends or teachers, on arrival in the morning.
In continuing with our Gardens and Growing theme, girls have dressed a gnome and used many adjectives in Creative Writing to tell everyone about it! The Outdoor Area turned into an obstacle course on Friday when the Reception girls put their engineering skills to test by creating a 'ball' run with the pipes and tubes.
Westbourne really is a hub of busy and exciting learning.
