Year 3 Visit Lower Smite Farm

Preparatory

21 June 2024

As part of their Science topic on ‘Helping Plants Grow Well’, Year 3 visited Lower Smite Farm owned by Worcestershire Wildlife Trust. The farm is a 150 acre working arable farm with an Environmental Education Centre.

During the day Year 3 dissected flowers to help them understand pollination and to know the names of parts of flowers. They went on a wildflower hunt looking for daisy, bowl and bell shaped flowers.

They also examined different soil structures and carried out an experiment to see if the addition of compost to soil improved its quality. As different pollinators, they had a race to transfer pollen between flowers then, using Lego they built different soil structures.

The highlight of the day was going on a sensory hunt around the gardens!

On return everyone was most surprised that we had not been soaked as the weather at school had been very stormy.
