A Fascinating Visit to the Home of Shakespeare
01 July 2022
Year 8 pupils enjoyed a visit to Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of one of England’s greatest and most prolific playwrights.
"I loved the English Trip, it was very fun! It was fascinating to see the legendary William Shakespeare's house. We got to see each room and learnt about what Shakespeare’s normal day to day life was like. I learnt that the front bedroom is called the parlour and is where guests sleep when they stay over. As well as this I learnt that his house is now called 'Joan Hart's Cottage' as Joan (Shakespeare's younger sister) was the last to live in the house, where she married and had four children.
"Not only did we see Shakespeare's house we got to see Anne Hathaway's Cottage too. In her house there were a lot of features that I did not know existed in a Tudor household. For example there was a small door next to the fire in the kitchen. This was used to store meat as the smoke from the fire would preserve it. In addition to this, Anne had an old style hot water bottle in her bedroom. It is called a hot plate and was used by burning coal. Not too safe!
"Overall I really enjoyed this trip and loved learning new things about how life was back then. My favourite part would have to be having a look at the amazing artefacts in the museum at the start of the trip. That was fascinating!"
