Focus on the Future

Senior School | Sixth Form

01 April 2022

It was all eyes on the future this week as students in Years 10, 11 and Year 12 attended a special EHS Careers Day. The Futures event is designed to showcase the endless opportunities on offer in the world of work, introducing girls to a variety of professions, talking through the different pathways available to get there and, ultimately, showing where their chosen careers could take them.

Year 12 student Rhea writes:

We welcomed back alumni who had prepared a variety of speeches, ranging from nutritional health to the field of performing arts. The focus was ultimately on the journey to the current careers that they are undoubtedly succeeding in, delivering real inspiration for us as young women looking to shape our own futures.

On Wednesday, we were delighted to welcome back an old EHS girl, Hanna Alam. Former Head Girl Hanna left in 2016 to study religion, politics and society at Kings College London. Having joined the school’s Westbourne department in 2000, she, like many other students, myself included, have had the opportunity to listen to many speeches from the successful girls who once started forming their careers at EHS.

As the day progressed, EHS welcomed back many more familiar faces, including: Harriet Priest, Clem Macliver, Hayley Williamson, Sabina Storrod, Anah Ahee, Maya Jaswal, Aisha Blakemore Razaq and Beth Meacham. Year 11 were also invited to join the lunchtime networking session in the Sixth Form Centre to discuss different careers paths.

The women then presented informative workshops to KS4 and above about their career pathways, what their daily working lives look like and how EHS supported them in various means and ways to get them to where they are today. As a student aspiring to study and eventually work in international banking, I chose to attend presentations of chartered accountancy and Finance. They gave me a great insight into university life, the work involved and how we should not let failure hinder our potential for success. Both speeches explored the idea that change is ok, and some things may not go to plan, but with resilience and perseverance, we can all achieve our goals.

Year 10 students thoroughly enjoyed the workshops and the special ballet performance too. They could really relate to the Old Girls who had studied the GCSEs they are currently studying themselves, offering tips on study skills and revision, gaining work experience and how to make the most of opportunities to explore their future pathways. As one pupil commented: “It was really interesting to see what they have achieved since leaving EHS and how their careers have developed”.

On Friday, we enjoyed the performance of singer-songwriter and Old Girl Gaby Kinney. Although she left EHS with a passion for sport, especially athletics, and furthered her studies at the University of Loughborough with a degree in Sports science and management, her career path completely changed when she reconnected with her passion for music and songwriting.

Thank you very much to Rhea for her write-up of the Futures event and we look forward to the next event which is already in the planning stages. If anyone would like to be involved please get in touch.

Careers department.
