Celebrating International Women's Day
10 March 2023
The Sixth Form leadership team led an excellent assembly to mark International Women’s Day (IWD). Having previously spoken to the Senior School about inspirational women, on this occasion the girls chose to talk about the situation of women nationally and internationally, and how to approach women’s issues in a way that is comprehensive and inclusive.
They spoke about how, whilst inequalities in the UK remain, the international picture shows that the situation for women in the majority of other countries is much more severe, with women being disproportionately affected by violent conflict and human rights being limited in many places due to government policies, poverty, and remoteness to schools.
They also introduced the concept of equity, the theme of IWD 2023, recognising that inequities exist between different groups of women, dismissing talk of a single ‘female experience’.
Whilst IWD is an occasion on which to recognise the challenges ahead it is also an opportunity to recognise the progress being made. In doing so, the students cited examples such as Rwanda, a country leading the way on gender equality in introducing paid maternity leave and childcare facilities to enable greater numbers of women to participate in the workforce as men, Nicaragua, where there is an equal number of men and women in Parliament, and the work of activists such as Anis Hidayah, Mina Smallman and Rose Kobusinge.
Well done to our leadership team, Sana, Jiaying and Abigail, who spoke articulately, demonstrating a clear understanding of the issues at hand.
Happy International Women's Day from everyone at Edgbaston High School, from Nursery to the Sixth Form! We are proud to champion women’s achievements on this day and every day, and are privileged to play a key role in developing the female leaders of tomorrow.
