Conquering the Malvern Hills

Senior School | Sixth Form

08 March 2024

On Sunday morning, the Duke of Edinburgh Gold and Silver participants woke up bright and early looking forward to the day walk ahead of them. After an hour’s coach journey, excitement grew as they drew closer to Malvern Hills. The sun was shining brightly and there was an unexpected surprise of snow on top of the hills which greeted them.

After dividing into three groups and receiving maps and compasses from their teachers, each group was prepared to set off on their route.

Although climbing up the hills may have been challenging, everyone persevered and we were rewarded with views of the picturesque landscape of the town of Malvern as well as reaching the top of the snowy hills.

The groups carried on trekking through their various routes up and down the hills, eventually going through the forests where they trudged through mud, climbed over gates and came face to face with sheep and cows, ending up very muddy! But thanks to the teachers they were able to stay on route and not get lost.

Although there may have been some challenges from the day such as having to crawl up the paths when it became a little too icy, to getting stuck when walking through the muddy forests, everyone encouraged one another to be resilient. There were plenty of highlights as well, including the views, a couple of snowball fights and of course, lunch.

All groups walked cheerfully up the road after spotting the coach waiting to collect them and bring them home. Everyone was tired out but content with the day’s events and the memories created.
