EHS girls compete in Oxford Schools Debating Competition
09 February 2018
After school on Friday 2 February, Mariam Al-Ani and Lava Yassen travelled the short distance to St Paul’s Girls School to compete in the opening round of the Oxford Schools Debating Competition. It was Mariam and Lava’s first time representing the school in a national competition and the standard, as always, was very high.
In the first debate, Mariam and Lava were opening opposition on the motion ‘This House believes that private schools should be abolished’. It was a bit of a baptism of fire for the girls, especially considering the unique nature of an Oxford debate, which allows only 15 minutes of preparation time and forces debaters to team up with other students they do not know.
By the second debate Mariam and Lava felt they had warmed up a bit. This time they were closing Government (proposition) on the motion ‘This House would legalise all drugs’; another thorny debate against very accomplished teams.
Although Mariam and Lava did not go through to the next round, they did EHS proud by attending the competition and throwing themselves into the contest. Well done, Mariam and Lava!
