All Rise As EHS Goes On (Mock) Trial

Senior School

28 May 2021

On Saturday 5th June the EHS Mock Trials team will participate in the annual Independent Schools Mock Trial Event. This year, however, because of the pandemic, whilst the trial will be staged here at EHS, the event itself will take place online.

The Independent Schools Mock Trial competition is designed to help young people understand how the law touches every aspect of their lives and gain an insight into how the legal system works. Taking part is a fun and engaging experience for students that helps them to think critically, build arguments and boost their confidence. Open to 15-18 year olds at Independent Schools in England, teams are made up of 10-15 students with a team of four barristers, four judges, a clerk, an usher and jury members. Each student is given specific guidelines on how to prepare for their role and presented with a prosecution or defence case.

Mr Smith and the Team of Year 11 and 12 students have been preparing hard with lots of rehearsing and run-through sessions and are excited to finally be able to take part. Due to the global pandemic, however, this year the students will compete against just one school.  EHS will take on Oxford International College via Zoom and a working judge will be presiding over the session to ensure that it is all above board and as realistic as possible.  The event is an excellent opportunity for the girls to display their communication skills in a formal, competitive setting and it promises to be an interesting and enriching experience for all involved.  The students will be taking the roles of barristers, clerks and witnesses and spent the last six months meticulously learning their roles and the case. Best of luck, EHS!
