School Birthday Celebrations

Westbourne | Preparatory | Senior School | Sixth Form

04 February 2022

Each year in January the whole school, from Nursery to Year 13, gathers together to celebrate Edgbaston High School’s ‘birthday’ and 146 years of excellence. Although we were unable to gather as a group this year, girls watched the celebrations from their classrooms, live streamed from the Octagon.

The assembly was opened by the Senior Choir who sang a wonderful Jazz version of 'My Favourite Things' from The Sound of Music, directed by Mr Robson and Mr Skilbeck, with Mrs O'Malley on the piano - a slight adaptation of the original, but a modern twist for a birthday celebration.

After a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ and blowing out the candles on our specially made cake, the live stream for Prep, Senior and Sixth Form pupils with Mrs Macro speaking about our mighty network of Old Girls, our alumni. EHS Old Girls can be found in an impressively wide range of professions and industries, but often, just as interesting as the destination are the pathways travelled to arrive at that destination. We heard summaries about the following girls:

  • Anah, Cyber Security Analyst
  • Vanessa, Graphic Designer
  • Leyla, Doctor in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care
  • Stephanie, Project management and Construction

Meanwhile, in their classrooms girls in Westbourne focussed on what jobs they thought they might like to do when they grow up. In Nursery they talked about the jobs their parents did. Kindergarten and Reception pupils came up with an impressively wide range of jobs which included doctor, dentist, pharmacist, horse rider, firefighter, policewoman, gymnast, Olympian and footballer to name a few. They then sang a song they had learnt which gave them further ideas for suitable career paths.  The girls thoroughly enjoyed looking at the careers of some EHS Old Girls before following up the assembly with some writing.

Thank you to all our pupils, parents and staff who make Edgbaston High School such a wonderful place to learn and work. We look forward to celebrating many more birthdays in the years ahead!
