The Testaments – by Margaret Atwood – Science Fiction / Dystopian (suitable for all ages)
When the van door slammed on Offred's future at the end of The Handmaid's Tale, readers had no way of telling what lay ahead for her—freedom, prison or death. With The Testaments, the wait is over. Margaret Atwood's sequel picks up the story fifteen years after Offred stepped into the unknown, with the explosive testaments of three female narrators from Gilead.
Miss Lee’s Comments: The long-awaited sequel to “A Handmaid’s Tale”, Margaret Atwood does not disappoint. The three narrators is an interesting take, with one being a little stronger than the others… but that might just be my opinion.
The Clan of the Cave Bear – by Jean M. Auel – Historical Fiction / Prehistoric Fiction (suitable for Year 9+)
A natural disaster leaves the young girl wandering alone in an unfamiliar and dangerous land until she is found by a woman of the Clan, people very different from her own kind. To them, blond, blue-eyed Ayla looks peculiar and ugly - she is one of the Others, those who have moved into their ancient homeland; but Iza cannot leave the girl to die and takes her with them. Iza and Creb, the old Mog-ur, grow to love her, and as Ayla learns the ways of the Clan and Iza's way of healing, most come to accept her. But the brutal and proud youth who is destined to become their next leader sees her differences as a threat to his authority. He develops a deep and abiding hatred for the strange girl of the Others who lives in their midst, and is determined to get his revenge.
Miss Lee’s Comments: Clan of the Cave Bear is book 1 of 6 so if you really enjoy it, you have plenty to read! Not only is it a fun adventure to follow, the level of knowledge regarding prehistoric people and plants is amazing.
