Following the sad news of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, the first edition of Friday Headlines, the school's weekly e-newsletter that was due to be sent to you on Friday 9 September, was postponed. As a mark of respect, we also updated our website to reflect the news and have refrained from posting on school social media channels for the past 10 days.
We are pleased to be able to send the postponed e-newsletter with you, today (Tuesday). We have a great deal to share with you about the things we have already been doing since the start of term, and as such there will be another e-newsletter on Friday. Please find below my welcome back that that was due to go out on Friday 9 September.
As ever it has been wonderful to welcome pupils back to school, and we are all ready to embark on the exciting year ahead. We congratulated our outgoing Year 13s and Year 11s on their respective results day, and we look forward to working with all pupils this year to help them achieve their potential.
Well over a third of grades for Year 13 were the top grades A*/A, and I am delighted that over 90% of our cohort are off to their university of choice. We wish them well as they embark on the next part of their journey, and we know that they go with the determination, resilience, and academic skillset to be successful. At GCSE the girls achieved an impressive 65% of the top grades 9, 8 and 7. A third of students achieved 10 or more of these top grades. We are excited to see what this cohort will achieve in the next two years in the Sixth Form.
We said goodbye to some members of staff at the end of last term, three of whom had between them nearly 100 years of service.
Miss Richardson, Mrs Harrison and Mme Monet-Rosetti all retired after outstanding service and they will be missed a great deal from the History, English and MFL departments respectively. In addition, Miss Richardson and Mrs Harrison have very ably led several year groups through the higher education process and their expertise and excellence will also be missed. However, I am delighted to announce that Mrs Parsons, Head of Year 13, and Mrs Smith, Assistant Head of Year 13, will be the new UCAS advisers and with years of experience in leading the Sixth Form will be able to carry forward our excellent record of helping girls move to the best universities for the courses that they want to take. I am also pleased to announce that Mrs Shutt will be taking on a new post of ‘Aspiring Progression Co-ordinator'. She will be giving targeted advice to those students who are considering application to some of the most competitive universities and courses. Mr Hunt will become the new Head of EPQ, and he is looking forward to working with many Year 12 and 13s in achieving this highly sought-after qualification.
We also welcome several new members of staff to our community:
Miss Morgan – KEC Trainee (Math Department)
Mrs Ahmed – Teacher of Biology
Mrs Shelton – Teacher of History
Mrs Farrow – Teacher of Classics
Miss Reynolds – Teacher of Food & Nutrition
Mr Bhalla – Head of Chemistry, Maternity Cover
Mrs Ellazkani – Science Technician
The teachers of EHS are unstinting in their commitment to the students, and from our youngest to our oldest they take the time to get to know the individual and work with them to develop their strengths, help them flourish and move forward with confidence and enthusiasm.
The new year is always exciting; full of anticipation and opportunity. What is impressive, however, is that at EHS the energy of the girls and staff does not diminish. I cannot wait to see what will be achieved by all this year.
