Preparatory

22 October 2021

The inclement and changeable weather this week has not deterred the Prep girls from enjoying the learning opportunities afforded by trips to the school Allotment at the Guinea Gardens. Many year groups have visited and used a variety of skills many of which focused on the pumpkins growing there.

Year 2 enjoyed looking for signs of autumn and spotted lots of apples, pears, snowberries, raspberries and beautiful leaves on the trees.  The blue pumpkins were a favourite!  Year 3 also took an afternoon walk to the allotment where the girls had to guess the weight of the pumpkin and they made sensible estimates using their knowledge of grams and kilograms. They also explored the allotment looking for autumn colours and completing a seasonal palette.

Year 6 Gardening Club then picked and weighed the pumpkins that they had grown. They had a competition to see who could guess the weight of the biggest pumpkins and Naymah Irfan won! However, they had grown enough pumpkins for everyone to take one home! After the pumpkin pick the girls planted garlic ready for next summer.

At a time when we have focused on the outside, it is appropriate that we have introduced our new Prep Eco Reps. The girls are looking forward to promoting all of our Green Initiatives this year and maintaining our Green Flag status as an Eco School.

Other co-curricular activities are well underway too and members of History Club are exploring Aztec Civilisation. They have discovered that the Aztecs worshipped, among many others, a God of Chocolate!  These pupils have created a model of an Aztec god called Centeotl, which they will paint at the next meeting.

In Games lessons this week Year 2 have been introduced to hockey.  They listened carefully to safety instructions and how to hold the stick correctly.  They concentrated well to keep control of the ball as they followed the lines around the playground and moved between the gates.  Lines were important in Year 6 Mathematics lessons too as the girls challenged their mathematical drawing skills, producing Asteroid Curves using many straight lines.  They also created posters explaining the divisibility rules for any number.  It is important that the girls apply the skills they have learnt in different activities.

We have ended the half term with a celebration of harvest time with the mountain of produce donated to the Birmingham Crisis Centre.  Other celebrations included recognition of some charity fund raising by Cora, Margot and Genevieve who helped raise over £700 at a bake sale for Stand up to Cancer earning them Head Teacher’s certificates.  Our girls have been busy on the PE front too with Riyana earning her Stage 2 swimming award and Darcey and Orla sharing their experiences in their running club.  They are particularly enjoying the training and the weekend competitions.

In addition to being busy, the girls have continued to demonstrate excellent manners and the winners of our Courtesy Counts draw were Summer, Amy, Megan, Joanna and Scarlett. These were announced on ‘Wear it Pink’ Day when there was a rosy glow in the Prep School.

After such a busy half term we wish everyone a good break and look forward to seeing everyone on November 1 when term begins again.
