Celebrating STEM Week

Senior School

01 April 2022

Earlier in the term, the school was a hive of activity as we held a series of event to mark STEM week in the Senior School.

To kick the week off, we celebrated Pi Day, and the Maths Department challenged the girls to remember as many decimal places of pi as possible. On Tuesday, Year 7 were treated to a day out at the incredible Leicester Space Centre, finding out what it is like to live and work in space as well completing a trail around the centre itself, looking for facts about the Universe. Year 8 took on the Big Science Week Quiz, working in House teams and answering questions from all fields of science. It was the teams from St. David's house who took the overall win, but it was an extremely close competition.

At the end of the week, the girls were challenged to seek out the famous British scientists 'hiding' around the building and find out what made them famous. To round off Science Week, Year 10 were treated to talks from a high-profile line-up of scientists from Professor Robert Winston who talked about fertility, to Professor Andrea Sella talking about the strange behaviour of ice. It seems that the girls were most taken by Professor Jim Al-Kalili's suggestion that time travel is possible, so there's a good chance we might already have a future Time Lord amongst us!
