Specialist Study Day for English Students

Sixth Form

11 March 2022

Year 13 students studying A Level English Language and Literature participated in a special Study Day on Wednesday this week.

The course, organised by the English Department and hosted by the educational group Sovereign, was held online and focused on the text ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. Students heard from experts in the field of Literature at Imperial College, Durham University and Liverpool John Moores, as well as hearing from an experienced A Level examiner. Lectures focused on the presentation of characters, context and the use of Tennessee Williams’ methods and techniques in the play.

Afia, Gursharan, Lowri, Isabel, Hafsa and Niamh really enjoyed the day. Niamh said: ‘It was a really interesting day and we heard some fascinating ideas.  I think the most thought-provoking of the lectures was the one that examined whether the character of Stanley Kowalski is more than just a villain.  The lecturer spoke about whether he is a symptom of wider social structures and the arguments he made offered some really interesting perspectives of the text.’
