What's on in Westbourne
11 March 2022
In addition to the beyond the curriculum activities this week the girls in Westbourne have been busy in their classrooms too.
Many of the activities in Nursery this week have been focused on the rhyme, ‘Miss Polly had a dolly.’ These included many with a medical theme. The girls role played calling the doctor and examining the dolly using equipment from the doctor’s kit. They also used emergent writing skills to write some prescriptions for the poorly dolly. The procedure of thorough hand washing to remove all germs was also practised. Glitter was used to represent germs and the girls were able to see how germs can be left on items that are touched. This helped them to focus on the need for good hand washing.
The letter sound ‘b’ formed the basis for many activities in Kindergarten. Their range of activities included many aspects of the curriculum including science, physical education, ICT, art and maths. The girls looked at the life cycle of butterflies and made symmetrical butterflies for their spring tree.
They blew bubbles to make bubble prints and made bees from a variety of materials. Playing with the bee bots gave practice in ICT skills. The topic of birthdays gave opportunities to write party invitations, make cards and to count candles on a cake. Going on a shape hunt and matching shapes added to their maths work. As part of their physical development the girls used bats and balls and also thought about different sports that use these pieces of equipment.
This week in Reception, girls have been very busy planting their own beans in the Outdoor Area. Following this, they went back to the classroom and wrote out 'planting a bean' instructions themselves. Their Hyacinth pictures have been brightening up the classroom in the Spring weather and the girls learnt about a new artist called Giuseppe Arcimboldo. They copied his ideas by creating their own vegetable pictures in readiness for them to write about in Creative Writing. Girls also learnt how to read a map and reinforced this by creating their own map of the playground.
The girls have also enjoyed time in the playground on the new equipment, which arrived this week. Our thanks to EHSPA for this gift.
It is clear to see that the girls have many learning opportunities each week.
