Surfin' EHS

Sixth Form

24 June 2022

To celebrate finishing our Year 12 Summer Term exams and to celebrate the constraints of Covid finally being over, we were very kindly taken away to Polzeath Beach, Cornwall by Ms Jones-Owen, Mrs Campbell, Miss Leason, and Mrs Hayward for a week of surfing and a much-needed bit of fun!

Having arrived late Sunday afternoon, we stretched our legs after a long coach journey and walked down to the beach. We arrived back to our caravans to complete our first cooking challenge – think Ready! Steady! Cook! The teachers were keen to taste our culinary delights and did not hold back on their constructive comments.

On Monday morning we could not wait to get down to the beach and to get our wet suits on.  Who knew wetsuits were so difficult to actually get over your legs - we laughed a lot and were keen to meet our surf instructors. They being used to giggly sixth formers they preceded to put us to the test!  Neither the rain nor the many, many falls could dampen our EHS enthusiasm.

Tuesday called for another day of surfing - we certainly needed to do some extra stretches for our already aching muscles however, we could see the progress we were making and knew we had a lovely meal to look forward to at the local restaurant the Waterfront.

By Wednesday we were happily exhausted and were looking forward to our lovely trip to Padstow to taste Rick Stein’s famous fish and chips but there was no rest for us .… first, a 6 mile coastal walk to get the ferry at Rock!  We were in awe of the clear bluey, green water and the white sand. After another amazing day, we were treated to a meal at The Oyster Catcher restaurant. We were blessed with another fabulous sunset and a lovely view across the bay.

Thursday we were keen to get back in the sea for the last time. We made the most of it and some of us had even reached the pinnacle of being able to do a handstand on the board - we celebrated with a hot chocolate on the beach. A food challenge that resulted in Tacos ensued before a final walk to the beach where we faced the sea for one last time.

I have no doubt this trip will become a tradition as it captures the very essence of an EHS Sixth Form Former: Enthusiastic, Persevering and Fun-loving.
