This Week in Westbourne
20 January 2023
Rhymes are being looked at in Nursery this half term and this week Little Miss Muffet and her spider were a focus for learning in all areas of the curriculum. The girls acted out the well known rhyme in pairs and made spiders using a range of techniques. They also used their culinary skills to make curds and whey and created some spider biscuits having mixed the icing first. In Maths this week the girls have been looking out for ‘one’ in pictures and stories and have been creating the number with dabbers and rainbow writing.
The light covering of snow on Wednesday provided an unusual opportunity for mark making which the girls really enjoyed.
Dinosaurs have been roaming in Kindergarten as the girls have studied the ‘d’ letter sound. Dinosaurs have featured in Maths when completing repeating patterns, adding and taking one and measuring length and height. They have been writing words beginning with ‘d’ and read many dinosaur stories. Other ‘d’ studies have included Dads and what they mean to the girls, looking at parts of a daffodil, thinking about days of the week and dice themed games. The girls even moved like dinosaurs in their PE lesson and enjoyed making rice crispie dinosaur eggs.
In Reception, girls have continued with their Gardens and Growing theme. They listened to the story of Jasper's Beanstalk by Nick Butterworth and Nick Inkpen and, using their increasing phonics knowledge, they started to write sentences about the story. The weighing scales have been very popular and girls have learnt the terms 'balance', 'heavier' and 'lighter'. They have also been thinking about using numbers in different ways inside and outside of the classroom and have been looking at ordinal numbers from 1st to 10th.
In readiness for Chinese New Year next week, Reception girls have used their fine motor skills by filling up the food boxes with noodles on the tuff tray. They had a great time discussing their favourite foods as well as using the chop sticks and tweezers. We look forward to hearing more about their activities next week.
