This Week in Westbourne

Westbourne

29 April 2022

In the Discovery Den this week, the selected topic has helped to develop the girls’ physical skills further. Pupils from Nursery to Reception have learnt all about Women's Football and ball games. They showed off their footballing skills by kicking balls around cones and then shooting them into the goal!  Girls were able to design a new football kit and demonstrate their agility by jumping through hoops and playing skittles. Definitely some sports stars of the future amongst them.

In the classroom Nursery have focused on circle study. The activities they have engaged in have included making circles of different sizes and counting them, and also matching the number of punched circles to given numerals in order to develop their mathematical skills. They have also created some bubble paintings and have blown bubbles to further their understanding of spheres.

The letter focus in Kindergarten this week has been ‘v’.  They have looked at how the letter is formed and thought of different things that begin with this sound.  The theme of vegetables has provided one focus with talking about the range of vegetables they do and do not like and using them to complete mathematical work.  The story of Oliver’s Vegetables has provided a good topic for language work.  They also found it exciting to learn about volcanoes and to make one together that erupted.  Our very own Vesuvius at EHS.

Kindergarten girls have also used the colours of the rainbow to help them to think about numbers that add together to make 10. They have been thinking ahead to possible future careers too and have been thinking about the job of a vet. They shared how to look after animals and even made their own pets.

In Reception girls have been learning how to use programmable toys. They have enjoyed giving instructions to their Beebot using the direction buttons. It proved challenging but many of the girls were able to get their Beebot to the right place. They have used their mathematical skills in other ways too by continuing to practise their number bonds and demonstrating their understanding using cubes and writing their own calculations.
Reception pupils have also listened to the story of Handa's Surprise and written the story out in their own words.  Girls also had time to use the masks available to act out the story. They were fascinated to discover more about Kenya and how others live.

Another busy week after the holiday and they definitely will enjoy the extra day off this weekend with Bank Holiday Monday. We look forward to hearing about their activities on Tuesday on return to school.
