Westbourne's Young Musicians

Westbourne

28 June 2024

Westbourne girls visited the Music Department on Friday of last week.

The morning started with girls learning a new song with Mr Skilbeck. They enjoyed listening to him play the piano accompaniment and were even able to have a little turn with playing the piano themselves! Some girls were able to make their own music on the keyboards using the headphones so they could concentrate on their own tunes.

Next, the girls were invited into the Elgar room to play the drums! Mr Pepper played short rhythms that the girls had to carefully copy using their drums. They were also encouraged to make their music exciting by playing loudly and quietly and even creating some crescendos as they played. The children explored tempo too as they copied slow rhythms and fast rhythms.

Finally, children spent time thinking about the theory behind music with Miss O’ Malley. They were introduced to crotchets (blue) and quavers (jello) and rests (where they turned themselves into a unicorn to look like the rest symbol). To reinforce these concepts, they were encouraged to play some bingo and domino games!

A big thank you to the music department for hosting us for the morning!
