What's on in Westbourne

Westbourne

04 February 2022

This week has been National Story Telling Week which provided us with some really enjoyable moments in Westbourne. These started in Nursery when Mrs Hartley, Head teacher, visited for the afternoon. We had a pyjama party which focused on the story ‘Polly’s Pink Pyjamas’ shared by Mrs Hartley. The girls then designed their own pyjamas before being given a copy of the book each to take home to share with families. During the week other members of staff also recorded stories for the girls to enjoy at bedtime each day.

In line with the chosen book girls in Nursery have enjoyed a range of other activities based on the rhymes Polly Put the Kettle On and I’m a Little Teapot. These have included paint rolling on giant teacups, making and tasting tea and other drinks in china cups and lots of afternoon tea party role play.

In addition to marking Chinese New Year Kindergarten girls have continued their work on the letter sound g, based on The Gruffalo story. They listened to the story before thinking about the features of his appearance and writing them down.  They used their storytelling skills in this special week to retell this well-loved story and discussed the feelings of the characters in the story. The Gruffalo theme has also offered opportunities to extend Mathematics knowledge.  Girls used 2D shapes, completed some addition sums and ordered the characters by height, weight and length.

The project has been completed by making Gruffalo crumble. Delicious!

In Reception, girls have continued to enjoy learning about addition in Mathematics. They were very keen to be the teacher and wrote out their own sums using little dolls to count with. They used another doll in French, Tilly, who was used to teach the girls how to count to 10. They also enjoyed looking at the French books available to them.  A number of girls picked up the language quickly and were able to recite numbers independently in front of their friends.

The Discovery Den was a huge hit with the girls where they learnt how to mix colours and try on colour mixing glasses. On Friday, girls made bird feeders in preparation for Bird watch week this week following the Big Garden Bird Watch at the weekend.

Entries into our Happiness Box showed clearly how much Westbourne girls enjoy school on a daily basis!
